Saturday Dad Reads Week of July 19
Leadership, Ball knowledge and an update on the summer reading stack
Welcome to this week’s edition! Here’s what we’ve got lined up:
📕 This week’s Book Summary and Review: The Essential Wooden
🧑🦰 Author Bio: John Wooden and Steve Jamison
💣️ Dad’s Knowledge Bomb: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
📣 This week’s Dad Rant: Summer Reading Stack
Summary
The Essential Wooden by John Wooden and Steve Jamison distills the legendary coach’s core philosophies on leadership, character, and success into a concise and practical guide. Drawing from Wooden’s "Pyramid of Success" and his decades of coaching and mentoring, the book emphasizes values such as hard work, integrity, teamwork, and personal growth. Rather than focusing solely on winning, Wooden shares timeless lessons on how to live a purposeful life, lead with humility, and achieve excellence by focusing on effort and preparation. It’s a deeply personal and accessible collection of wisdom that applies far beyond the basketball court.
📕 Review
Of the books I’ve read in my summer leadership series, this one carries the most weight for me.
In terms of credibility, John Wooden got results as a leader and I can’t field an argument to say otherwise. National championships and undefeated seasons speak volumes. Wooden was also eminently quotable and with Steve Jamison, they were able to take the choicest, most “essential” bits of Wooden’s coaching philosophy and make them “stick” so that they remain with you for a while.
While Wooden is most known in leadership circles for his “Pyramid of Success,” this is not the main focus of the book. We get an executive summary of it along with the coach’s best quips and thoughts on leading and developing a team.
At less than 200 pages, the book itself is a quick read on leadership (if that’s what you’re looking for). However, it begs you to take notes (I ended up with 7 notebook pages full), annotate, underline, highlight, and dog-ear. It is absolutely packed with wisdom. In fact, I would argue that you could read this this book every week, month, or year in perpetuity and each time pick up something meaningful and immediately applicable to your individual leadership context.
In my reading, here are my key takeaways:
A leader must be a meticulous planner to maximize his and his team’s time.
Nothing is more important than the quality of one’s effort.
Stop comparing yourself to others. Others will do enough of the comparing for you.
Nothing is stronger than gentleness.
Rating: ☕️☕️☕️☕️☕️- Even if you’re not a coach or find yourself in a position of leadership, this is one I would recommend to any dad looking for some life lessons to impart. In fact, Wooden communicates a large amount of wisdom that was imparted to him from his own father, Joshua Wooden, throughout the book.

John Wooden

Steve Jamison
John Wooden was a legendary American basketball coach and player, best known for his remarkable success as head coach of the UCLA Bruins. Born on October 14, 1910, in Hall, Indiana, Wooden led UCLA to ten NCAA national championships in a 12-year span, including a record seven in a row from 1967 to 1973. His coaching career was defined not just by victories but by his emphasis on character, discipline, and personal integrity. Wooden’s "Pyramid of Success," a model he developed to teach leadership and life skills, became an enduring symbol of his philosophy. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame both as a player and a coach, a rare and prestigious honor.
Steve Jamison is an American author, speaker, and collaborator known for his work on leadership, success, and personal development. He is most recognized for his collaborations with John Wooden, helping to bring Wooden’s teachings to a broader audience through books like Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court and Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. Jamison’s writing distills Wooden’s wisdom into accessible, practical lessons that resonate with readers beyond the realm of sports. Through his work, Jamison has become a respected voice in the field of personal development and a key figure in preserving and promoting John Wooden's legacy.
💣️Knowledge Bomb: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

For this week’s knowledge bomb, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at one of, if not the best basketball player John Wooden coached during his tenure at UCLA: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, formerly known as Lew Alcindor.
From 1966 to 1969, Abdul-Jabbar led the Bruins to three consecutive NCAA championships and an astounding 88–2 record. His dominance on the court was so profound that the NCAA eventually banned the dunk, a rule change widely attributed to his impact. Playing under Wooden’s disciplined, team-first system, Abdul-Jabbar developed not only as an athlete but also as a thoughtful and principled individual, deeply influenced by Wooden’s emphasis on character, preparation, and humility.
Coach Wooden and Abdul-Jabbar forged a relationship rooted in mutual respect and shared values, despite their different backgrounds. Wooden's guidance helped Abdul-Jabbar navigate the pressures of fame, racial tensions of the era, and the transition from high school prodigy to collegiate superstar. Abdul-Jabbar later credited Wooden’s mentorship as pivotal in shaping both his basketball career and his broader outlook on life. Their time together at UCLA stands as one of the most successful and meaningful player-coach partnerships in sports history.
📣 Dad Rant: Summer Reading Stack
Not so much of a rant this week, but rather a status update. I read multiple books at a time and dip into each one on a semi-nightly basis just like your old man flipped through channels when you were a kid. Here’s what I’m reading right now:
Under the Banner of Heaven - John Krakauer (also have the Audible version)
Patriot Games - Tom Clancy
Red Storm Rising - Tome Clancy (also have the Audible version)
Freedom Summer - Bruce Watson
Broiler - Eli Cranor
Five Floors Up - Brian McDonald
One Rough Man - Brad Taylor
Vietnam: A History - Stanley Karnow
Right now, I’m closest to finishing One Rough Man and Red Storm Rising. Look for those reviews in coming weeks.
Saturday Dad’s Rating System
I’m not a published author. Therefore, I’m never going to shit all over something that someone poured themselves into. That being said, each book will be rated on a scale of 3-5 coffees. Here’s what that means:
☕️ ☕️ ☕️ - You’re going to want to get comfortable and fill that cup up 3 times. This one’s solid!
☕️ ☕️ ☕️ ☕️ - You’re going to want to give yourself a few hours of alone time. Fill that bad boy up 4 times and buckle up.
☕️ ☕️ ☕️ ☕️ ☕️ - Send the kids to grandma’s house and call off work. You’re not going to be able to put this one down. Make a whole pot and settle in for the long haul!
